The easiest way of explaining what prepositions are, is to say that a preposition is a word that explains where something/someone is or was and when something/someone is/was there.
The book is on the table The cat is in the house The program starts at 10 o`clock We came home before dark Prepositions can be quite tricky to get right. One of the reasons is that there are no rules to follow. We visit friends at the hospital, because they are in hospital. Why is it like that? It just is.
There are basically three types of prepositions:
Time preposition - when someone is doing something She was reading a book while she waited. She fell asleep during the movie He started school at the age of 6. My birthday is in February We use in for months and year, on for days and dates and at for times. Place preposition - where something or someone is.
Janet is at school. The hat is at the top of my head The book is on the table The dog is under the bed The car is in the garage My daughter is behind the sofa. We have a house by the seaside Direction preposition - tells us the direction of something
