You have learnt about people and places through what you have read, visited some parts of the country, and tried to catch the atmosphere of its capital, London. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK). The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain, or Britain, as we usually call it, is made up of three countries, England, Wales and Scotland. It is situated off the north-western coast of the European mainland. The UK has an area of 93,800 square miles (243,000 km2), making it the 80th largest sovereign state in the world and the 11th largest in Europe. The UK is the 22nd most populous country, with an estimated 64.5 million inhabitants. It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. Its capital is London, an important global city and financial centre. The current monarch since 1952 is Queen Elisabeth II.
