People want peace, but the world has never had peace. There is always a war going on somewhere in the world, and sometimes in several places at the same time. In Norway there has been peace since World War II. Why do wars happen? In the past 2500 years the world has had peace in only one year out of twelve. The Old Testament and classical litertature gives us loads of stories. During the 16th and 17th centuries, there were only nine years without war in Europe. In the 1990s, more than 25 large conflicts were going on in the world. So why do these wars happen? Wars of conquest Most wars, both past and present, have been started to get more land, wealth and power. World War II was a war of conquest when Nazi Germany wanted to dominate the world. Civil Wars War between people in the same country because of differences in political or religious beliefs. Examples of a civil war is The American civil war, which took place in 1861-1865. Syria is now in the middle of a civil war. Civil wars are usually especially hard on the civilians living in the country. Religious wars Throughout history several wars have been fought because of religion. In recent years, religion is usually not a main factor, but an essence. Today we could say that ISIS and Al Quiada are fighting their own religious wars. Wars of Independence Are wars where the aim is to gain the right to be independent and where the country wants to govern itself. These types of wars have been seen throughout the whole world and in both recent and ancient times. Organizations working for peace and human rights
